It's Not Free Money !
Have you heard about the Great Fun scam ?? Apparently after
buying something from an infomercial, you receive a "rebate check"
for $8.25. If you don't read the fine print, you are charged
$149.99 after 30 days for a membership in something.
Information was read on the radio of a story about people who
purchased various products online (Snuggle, Pedi Paws, Aqua Globe,
etc.) that are now receiving what they thought were rebate checks in
the mail. By reading the fine print, you will see that the
check if not a rebate check, but an acceptance to a membership that
includes a yearly membership fee. The DJ had many callers
mention that when they attempted to call the number to cancel the
service they had a difficult time getting through.
If you receive something like this, please take a look at the
back of the check and read the fine print !!
An example of the fine print may be something like this:
"I authorize (Company Name) to charge the annual membership fee
after my free trial. I agree to a thirty-day trial offer in
(Company Name). I understand that the $149.99 annual
membership fee will be charged to my credit card on file with
(Company Name) unless I cancel my membership by calling
1-888-###-#### before the end of the trial period. My
membership will be automatically renewed and I will also be charged
every year thereafter at the then current fee unless I call to
cancel for a refund of the unused portion of the current year's fee.
By cashing this check, I authorize (Company Name) to securely
transfer my credit card information to (Company Name) for
enrollment, billing and benefit processing."
